Biography

Rovellyn was born and raised in Vallejo, California in a very religious home. Growing up, she went to church every Sunday and said prayers with her family every night. She believed in God and in Jesus Christ and, therefore, always considered herself a Christian. She believed that as long as she did more good than bad, and that if she fulfilled all her religious obligations, then when the time came, she would most likely go to heaven. As a sophomore at Vallejo High, some friends who were "born again" invited her to a Bible Study held during lunch. At these Bible studies, she heard for the first time that she could have a personal relationship with God. Until then, God had always been a kind of mystical being who was far away in heaven and watched over us, keeping tabs on the good and bad things we've done. She also heard that she could be 100% sure of going to heaven because it didn't depend on what she did but on what the Lord Jesus did by taking her sins and paying for them on the cross. It was then that she became a Christian. She truly believed in her heart that her sins were paid for when Jesus died on the cross. She no longer had to worry whether or not she was good enough. She believed that what Jesus did was more than enough.

Through high school and most of college, Rovellyn's Christian life was like a rollercoaster ride. She made some bad choices, but her faithful Father in heaven was sure to bring her back around. It was during her senior year in college at Sacramento State that she decided to give up trying to live her own life and instead started to do things God's way. Besides, her way only brought her grief and misery anyway. She was at a point where she was ready and willing to do anything and go anywhere for God—even to the jungles of Africa if that’s what He wanted. After graduating from Sacramento State, she ended up moving to the jungles of San Francisco where she got involved with a small church. Through that church, she was involved in college campus ministry at San Francisco State, UC Berkeley, and Sacramento State. On the campuses she supported the Bible Study, shared the Gospel, and discipled young women.

It was also in the church in San Francisco where Rovellyn met her husband Tom. While serving the Lord together in the church body, on the campus at UC Berkeley, and working for the same company in Berkeley, they became great friends and eventually fell in love. They were married on June 3, 1995. They have two children, Stephen and Danielle.

Tom and Rovellyn joined New Harbor in the spring of 2004 and enjoy the privilege of serving the Lord with the family of God in Benicia. Rovellyn served as the Kids' Club Director at New Harbor from September 2006 to February 2008. She is also currently a substitute teacher in the Benicia Unified School District.

Favorite Things

Music: I enjoy listening to classic R&B and contemporary Christian music.

Movies: The Sound of Music is probably my all-time favorite. I can watch it over and over again. I also enjoy most romantic comedies, and most sci fi movies. I do not like scary movies!

Hobbies: I love to cook, bake, entertain at home, knit, play volleyball, and hang out with family and friends.
I also recently took up golf with my husband Tom, and I am enjoying it.

Life Scriptures

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"
2 Corinthians 5:17
(I thank God for a fresh start!)

"We love because He first loved us."
1 John 4:19

(It's only because I know God's love in my own life, that I can see past myself to love Him and others.)

"For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure."
Philippians 2:13

(It's encouraging to know that the desire and the ability to serve God comes from Him as I allow Him to work in me.)

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me."
John 10:27

(I will always know what to do as long as I am listening to and following the voice of the Good Shepherd through the Word of God. He knows me and knows exactly what I need.)
